Zambales '08 4: Subic Bay Diving (Again!)

Dec. 22, 2008: My second time to go scuba diving. A splendid end to our trip, after our unplanned mountain & cave hiking, education outreach program, and tour of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.

As with my first diving experience, our adventure was sponsored by the Boardwalk Dive Center (owned by sir George Ang Dy Pay).

The opposite held true for Ynna, who was battling fever.

Dahil nga may sakit si Ynna, naiwan kami sa dive center while the other LIRA poets went on a night tour of the beachfront.

Full album list of our 12/08 Zambales trip:
Trip background: Two years ago, the poets of LIRA traveled north to teach poetry to teachers & students in Sta. Cruz, Zambales under the "Sining ng Tugma at Sukat" program of LIRA & the NCCA, under the leadership of sir Michael M. Coroza & then-LIRA President Beverly W. Siy. (STS Overall Project Coordinator pa lang ako nito, and 2 months away from being elected LIRA President. Kaya mukha pa akong totoy!)

2nd time ko palang pumunta sa Zambales for 2008 (the first time for STS Subic, and yes, my first diving experience).

This album is a bittersweet reminiscing, too: this was the first and last time that we were on an out-of-town trip with poet-mountaineer Mark Schwab, who joined his creator in 2009.

Zambales '08 3: Subic Tour (Spanish Gate, Shipwreck)

Dec. 22, 2008: SBMA tour before our diving and the day after our unplanned mountain & cave hiking and education outreach program.

We went to three places that I had failed to visit during my first Subic tour a few weeks earlier: the San Roque church, the gate to the old Spanish naval yard, and a museum for a Manila-Acapulco galleon shipwreck, along with a ship replica by the sea.

Zambales '08 2: Teaching Poetry, Mayor's Party

Kuha ni ms. Beng.

Dec. 21, 2008: After our unplanned mountain & cave hiking, dumeretso kami sa bahay ni Mayor Luisito Marty para sa tanghalian, tapos ay sa Sta. Cruz North Central Elementary School para magturo ng tula sa pamumuno ni sir Michael M. Coroza & then-LIRA President Beverly W. Siy. (STS Overall Project Coordinator pa lang ako nito, and 2 months away from being elected LIRA President.

Zambales '08 1: Impromptu Mountain & Cave Trekking

Ms. Beng, ako, Ynna, Levi, Rye, Mark (RIP), the Basco sisters (Marly & Tina).

From ms. Tina's cam.

Dec. 21, 2008: Two years ago, the poets of LIRA traveled north to teach poetry to teachers & students in Sta. Cruz, Zambales.

Ang sidetrip: hiking up and down a mountain to reach the Sagrada Familia Caves. It was my first time to go spelunking -- although we were terribly overdressed (naka-smart casual kami ni Ynna) because we had been prepared to teach, not to trek! Hehe.

Before 9 AM, nasa Zambales na kami, where we were treated to breakfast at Mayor Luisito Marty's house. Dumeretso na kami sa Sta. Cruz North Central Elementary School para magturo ng tula sa pamumuno ni sir Michael M. Coroza & then-LIRA President Beverly W. Siy. (STS Overall Project Coordinator pa lang ako nito, and 2 months away from being elected LIRA President.

Bebang sent us on an excursion to the caves, escorted by local folk. (Bale iniwan namin si sir Mike. Sorry po!)

Excited kami, siempre. The hilarity of how our pa-pormal clothes are backdropped by the rugged environment is demonstrated by the photos below.

LIRA Poetry Clinic 2010: June-August

June-August 2010: Workshops and lectures that followed the opening day of our LIRA Poetry Clinic 2010.

Hindi ako nakapagbantay sa Klinika nang tatlong linggo because of very important family matters, kaya may mga kulang na weekend dito. (Sorry, bad President!)

Trivia: the 2010 Clinic boasted the most number of active Fellows in LIRA history. The very first pic is enough evidence.

New Directors for the Writers Union of the Philippines

* * * * *

NEW OFFICERS ELECTED IN 36TH UMPIL CONGRESS
by N. Daniel Pinto

The Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas—the country’s largest alliance of writers, poets, novelists, editors and literary figures—held its its 36th Congress on August 28, 2010.

As early as eight in the morning, confreres started trickling into the GT Toyota Asian Center Auditorium at the University of the Philippines campus in Diliman, Quezon City, until the crowd swelled to a size big enough to prompt Dean Mario I. Miclat to take to the stage and deliver the welcome remarks. He was followed by outgoing UMPIL chair Victor Emmanuel Carmelo “Vim” D. Nadera Jr., who reported on the organization’s activities during his watch.

In his parting words, Vim Nadera underscored the need for writers to work with the educational departments for the promotion of literacy from literature. The pool of literary talents and the wealth of the country’s literary gems, he said, remain untapped because, all too often, there seems to be a break, a chasm, in the coordinative activities between the writers’ groups and the heads of educational institutions in the country. Now is the time for writers to offer assistance, with pen in hand as it were, Nadera stressed.

In a welcome innovation, the morning session featured a keynote lecture that aptly set the underlying theme of the Congress—Literature and Change—and summarized the core message of the event. And for the first of a series of what will henceforth be known as the Adrian E. Cristobal Lecture Series, the Congress organizers’ choice of inaugural lecturer went to multi-awarded UP professor emeritus Dr. Gémino H. Abad, who delivered a befitting discourse entitled “The Future Is First Shaped by Words.”

The Adrian E. Cristobal Lecture Series is a joint project of UMPIL and the Cristobal family in honor of the late Adrian E. Cristobal—litterateur, fictionist, essayist, satirist, and newspaper columnist—and in homage to the intellectual discipline that he so faithfully adhered to. (Of UMPIL’s three Chairmen Emeriti, Adrian Cristobal was the first, followed by the dear departed Mike L. Bigornia, and the now presently active and very much alive National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario.)

Before the writers settled down to a hearty luncheon catered by the durable Chinese eatery, Ma Mon Luk, they took time enough to elect from among them the incoming members of the UMPIL Board for 2010–2013. Thus: Abdon M. Balde Jr., chairman; Karina A. Bolasco, vice chair; Michael M. Coroza, secretary general; Romulo P. Baquiran Jr., treasurer; and Rebecca T. Añonuevo, auditor. Rounding off the UMPIL directorate are Marne Kilates, Mario I. Miclat, Charlson Ong, and Fidel Rillo, as well as the sectoral representatives which include Joaquin Sy, for Chinoy writers; Phillip Kimpo Jr., representing the poets of LIRA; representatives of GUMIL (for writers in Iluko), KUTING (for writers of children’s literature), and representatives of Sebuwano and Bisaya writers.

STS Vigan: Teaching Poetry + Old Spanish City + Pottery Making + Shopping

Hehe.

In lieu of the full album, heto muna ang ilang patikim piks mula sa aming trip.

Our venue: the grand library building of the ISNHS.

Yours truly giving an overview of the project.

A healthy number of delegates.

Dr. Michael M. Coroza helping out the teachers with their poems.

Mel, Debbie, and I enjoying the inimitable Vigan empanada.

Yours truly sitting on the ancient street. Mel, Mikael, Debbie sa sidewalk.

The boys, shocked (and embarrassed) at how Debbie's thing dwarfs their own juniors.

Panalo. Astig ang kuha ni ms. Beng. Pero mas astig ang talon ko (kaliwa). Naks.

The next morning. Mel, Debs, Miks, the Corozas, ms. Beng. Pag-alis namin 'to sa guest house ng ISNHS.

Kami sa labas ng bahay nina Mikael. Pagkatapos busugin ng bagnet atbp. Tenkyu po!

My failed attempt at making pottery.

Mikael's turn. Epic fail din.

Aba nadale ni Mel!

Sinadya daw 'yan ni Debbie.

Seryoso si miss Beng, hindi lang halata.

Last minute shopping bago umuwi.

Waiting for someone? (Dehins sa akin ang bag na 'yan. Hehe. Pasalubong ko para kay Ynna.)

National Series of Poetry Seminar-Workshops Visits Zambales

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the celebrated Filipino poetry group Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA) held the third leg of the nationwide “Sining ng Tugma at Sukat (STS; Art of Rhyme and Meter) 2010” in CASA San Miguel, San Antonio, Zambales last May 30, 2010.

Violin virtuoso Coke Bolipata of the CASA San Miguel was the event’s host. Teachers from different public and private schools from Zambales attended the day-long seminar-workshop presided over by award-winning poet and professor Dr. Michael M. Coroza of LIRA and Ateneo de Manila University.

In the morning, Dr. Coroza, along with the young LIRA poets who facilitated the event, taught the basics of rhyme and meter and the traditional forms of Filipino poetry. Along the way, the delegates were informed of the misconceptions being promulgated by errant textbooks.

National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario (a.k.a. Rio Alma) was the guest of honor of the event. The afternoon saw the delegates crafting short poems of their own in the traditional tanaga and awit forms.

After the workshop, Bolipata, Coroza, and LIRA President Phillip Kimpo Jr. awarded the certificates to the delegates.

The STS is a series of free seminar-workshops on poetry in Filipino to be held in nine towns across nine provinces of Luzon from March to December 2010. It is on its second year, with the first edition being held in 2008 when LIRA and the NCCA taught poetry to around 430 delegates in ten towns across Luzon.

For 2010, the first beneficiaries were San Fabian in Pangasinan and Baguio City. The STS is also scheduled to make the rounds of Vigan City, Ilocos Sur; Lucban, Quezon; Bataan province; Naga City, Camarines Sur; City of San Fernando, Pampanga; and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

The STS 2010 is one of the fifteen projects for LIRA’s year-long 25th anniversary celebrations. Founded in 1985 by the National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario (alias Rio Alma), LIRA is the premier institute of poets in Filipino.
